How to Unclog a Drain Without Harsh Chemicals
Skip the toxic drain cleaners. Use these natural methods to clear clogs safely and effectively.
Why Avoid Chemical Drain Cleaners?
Chemical drain cleaners can damage pipes, harm the environment, and create toxic fumes. Natural methods are safer and often just as effective.
Method 1: Boiling Water
For minor clogs, slowly pour a pot of boiling water down the drain in 2-3 stages, allowing it to work for several seconds between pours.
Method 2: Baking Soda and Vinegar
- Pour 1/2 cup of baking soda down the drain
- Follow with 1/2 cup of white vinegar
- Cover the drain and wait 30 minutes
- Flush with hot water
Method 3: Plunger
Use a cup plunger (not a flange plunger) for sinks. Create a seal and plunge vigorously 15-20 times.
Method 4: Drain Snake
For stubborn clogs, a drain snake (also called an auger) can break through hair and debris. Insert it slowly and rotate as you push.
Prevention Tips
- Use drain screens to catch hair and food particles
- Never pour grease down the drain
- Flush drains weekly with hot water
- Clean pop-up stoppers monthly
