Winter Plumbing Prep: Protect Your Pipes from Freezing
Even in Las Vegas, winter nights can freeze pipes. Learn how to protect your plumbing from cold weather damage.
Can Pipes Freeze in Las Vegas?
Yes! While rare, Las Vegas does experience freezing temperatures at night during winter. Exposed pipes, outdoor faucets, and unheated areas are at risk.
Before Winter Arrives
- ☐ Insulate exposed pipes in attics, garages, and crawl spaces
- ☐ Disconnect and drain garden hoses
- ☐ Install frost-proof outdoor faucets or insulated covers
- ☐ Seal cracks and gaps where pipes run through walls
- ☐ Know where your main water shut-off valve is located
During Cold Snaps (Below 32°F)
- ☐ Let faucets drip slightly overnight (hot and cold)
- ☐ Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air circulation
- ☐ Keep garage doors closed if pipes run through them
- ☐ Maintain indoor temperature at 55°F minimum, even when away
- ☐ Drain and shut off sprinkler systems
If a Pipe Freezes
- Turn off water at the main shut-off valve
- Open the affected faucet to relieve pressure
- Apply heat to the frozen section using a hair dryer or heat lamp (never use open flame)
- Call Serenity Plumbing at (702) 530-9917 if you can't locate the freeze or if pipes have burst
Signs of Frozen Pipes
- No water or reduced water pressure
